Funeral vehicles

Deighan’s offer a variety of options for the funeral cortege, should you choose to have one. In a traditional cortege the deceased in the coffin will travel from the funeral directors in a modern hearse to a location of your choice, via a chosen route or direct to the service venue and then on to the committal location if it’s different. Guests and family members would travel behind the hearse in a limousine, alternative hired transportation or in their own vehicles.

Transport options
Things to consider…

  • Who will require transport, close family and friends and other guests?
  • The type and number of vehicles you would like
  • Who you would like to travel in the cortege
  • If there is a specific route you would like the cortege to take
  • Are you having a service and committal in two locations?
  • The arrangement and display of floral tributes
  • If you would like a unique specialist funeral cortege with alternative and unusual vehicles

Specialist vehicles
In addition to a traditional hearse, we can also offer a range of other funeral vehicles to make the funeral even more personal. These include horse-drawn hearses and a horse-drawn mourners’ carriage or motorcycle side-car, Morris Minor, Land Rover or Volkswagen camper van, all adapted for use as a hearse for funerals.

If you are interested in using any of these vehicles please let us know as soon as possible, and preferably before the funeral date and time is arranged. Once the date and time has been arranged, we cannot guarantee availability.

Help with Funeral Expenses
For anyone who has served in the armed forces, it may be possible to obtain assistance with funeral arrangements. It may be possible to get help from the United Kingdom Service Personnel and Veterans Agency (SPVA), a Ministry of Defence (MOD) organisation aimed at improving personnel, pensions, welfare and support services to members of the Armed Forces and veterans.

Depending upon individual circumstances, the SPVA may be able to help with funeral expenses for a simple funeral in the UK if any of the following apply:

– The death was due to military service
– War Pensions Constant Attendance Allowance was being paid or would have been paid if the war pensioner had not been in hospital when they died
– Unemployability Supplement was being paid at the time of death and the SPVA had assessed a War Disablement Pension at 80% or more
– The person died while in hospital receiving treatment for a disablement for which they received a War Disablement Pension

If war veterans require help with funeral expenses, a claim must be made on a War Disablement Pension WPA 0010 Funeral Expenses Claim Form, which is obtainable from the SPVA.

The SPVA also runs the Joint Casualty and Compassionate Centre (JCCC), the department primarily responsible for monitoring and action certain procedures for UK military personnel if they become notifiable casualties in the UK or overseas.

Memorial services

Due to the unprecedented times we are experiencing due to COVID19 a lot of families are asking us about memorial services for their loved one`s for some time in the future.

We are working closely with a number of local venues in the hope that when restrictions are eased more, families may be able to get together and celebrate the life of their loved one. A lot of families are feeling that they have not given their loved one the send off they would have liked and we are doing all we can to put things into place at a future date. Please contact us if you want any more information and we will keep you updated of venues and prices as we move forward.

Some families choose to have a memorial service instead of a funeral.

This may involve a service at a local hotel or similar venue and can be if desired followed by a cremation or burial.

Some families choose to do this just at the venue, and then the funeral takes place later in the day and the ashes are returned to the family at a later date without the family attending the actual cremation or burial.

The memorial service may be held with just the ashes after the actual funeral has taken place.

There are lots of options for families to choose from and we will do our best to accommodate whatever the family requires.

Funerals are changing and we as a funeral parlour want to offer families as much choice as we can.

Interment of ashes

After a funeral at the crematorium there are a number of options of where your loved one`s ashes can be placed, or maybe you just wish to take them home with you.

Some families wish to just keep them at home, we offer a large range of urns and caskets if you would like to see the options.

Alternatively, other families wish to scatter their loved one`s ashes in a place that is special to them as a family. Please be aware there are restrictions where you can do this, please refer to the certificate of cremation for reference or contact us for further guidance.

Ashes can also be scattered at the crematorium where the cremation has taken place. This can be done after the service and family can be present if they wish.

You may wish to scatter your loved one`s ashes at sea, specialist urns or pillows are available for these special types of scattering, you will be unable to just “scatter” the ashes as there are specific guidelines. Please contact us for more information.

We are happy to arrange the interment of your loved one`s ashes and there are a number of options available.

OPTIONS AVAILABLE

Interment in an existing plot in a cemetery or churchyard
We can arrange for your loved one`s ashes to be placed in an existing family plot, and help you to complete all the necessary paperwork. Usually a short service will be held, either by a celebrant or minister to lay your loved one`s ashes to rest in their final resting place.  Please call to discuss prices and options and if you wish to purchase a casket.

Purchase of a plot in a cemetery or churchyard
We will help you choose a plot and then lay your loved one`s ashes to rest. Please note that Churchyards may have restrictions of whom can purchase a plot.

Memorial trees
Ashes can be laid to rest with the planting of a tree or shrub. Life for a life is a charity that offers this in their memorial forests. Please contact us for availability and prices.

Repatriation

Repatriation of your loved one, from or to the UK.

Why a repatriation?
Travel is exciting for the majority, but heart breaking and life changing for some.  Unfortunately, as Funeral Directors, we are all too familiar with tragedies, which occur away from home.  Many job seekers worldwide look for jobs outside of their current country and we have a mobile culture with personal travel increasing year on year.  There are a large number of people living and working in the UK who may wish to have their funeral service in their home country, and more than 1.2 million UK-born expatriates within the EU who may wish for their final resting place to be back in the UK.

Increasingly, funeral arrangements incorporate an international dimension that involves the transportation of the coffin/casket containing the deceased or the cremated remains. Whatever the point of origin and destination the Deighan’s draws on a wealth of experience of international funeral and travel insurance protocols.

For families who prefer to arrange a funeral service abroad, in a location where they may have never lived themselves, and are therefore uncertain how to proceed, we can help every step of the way.

What is involved?
There are lots of people involved behind the scenes for a funeral repatriation, from a mortuary to a funeral home, from one airport to another and finally into the care of the receiving funeral home, and it is an international team effort.  From the family’s perspective, having the help of one organisation to oversee the arrangements from start to finish simplifies the process, allowing them to focus on other matters.  From the letters we receive it’s clear that families appreciate the support of our team and we are always here as a point of contact if questions arise.

It’s important that we set expectations and keep in touch so that mourners know how matters are progressing.  Repatriation time frames and local procedures vary from one country to another and we must respect them in order to ensure that documents are complete to allow departure from one country and arrival to a funeral in another.

What can we offer?
We offer advice on all aspects of repatriation.  At an emotional time, families can struggle with decisions, especially when they were least expecting such life changing news.  We can offer special flight tariffs and a translation service. We can give advice on registration and documentation, organising embassy permission and dealing with airport protocols, provision of a certificate of embalming or sanitisation and an appropriate zinc lined coffin hermetically sealed for air transport, a safe place for your loved one to rest while all the arrangements are being made, washing facilities and a courteous and sympathetic service.  Working together we can bring loved ones home. Our aim is to arrange repatriations as rapidly, efficiently and sympathetically as possible.

For repatriation from the United Kingdom, if required, we can arrange for a funeral service in a local venue prior to the departure to the country of destination.

For repatriation to the United Kingdom, we can work with you to arrange all the aspects of the funeral service locally.

How much will it cost?
We believe that price transparency is vitally important and we will endeavour to keep you informed of the costs involved and provide an itemised written estimate.  Costs can vary greatly depending on the countries involved, so where relevant we have indicated that prices start from the amount shown.

Our usual charges for our professional services, vehicles and staff and bringing the deceased into our care (within a 20-mile radius) and initial care of the deceased would be charged which are shown here.

We would also charge a further fee for professional services for organising the repatriation, liaison with H.M. Coroner, issuing Funeral Director’s Declaration of Contents Certificate, organising and collating documentation and liaison with the Funeral Director in the other country involved.

We charge a mileage fee of £1.25 per mile to send a specialist vehicle to the airport to deliver or receive the coffin containing the deceased and for any other movements of the deceased outside of our usual 25-mile radius, along with two staff members who are charged at £35 per hour per person.

Other services that may be required:

  • Embalming and certificate of embalming from a British Institute of Embalming qualified embalmer
  • Translation Service for the Medical Certificate of Cause of Death
  • Freight Booking service charge – airline tariffs are normally based on the gross weight of the coffin, making it difficult to provide an accurate estimate prior to delivery to the airport.
  • Documentation service to London embassy
  • Customs and handling
  • Airway Bill production
  • Transfer of Coffin/Casket to embassy for official sealing if required
  • Suitable coffin with approved zinc lining or CAD seal and hessian wrapping
  • Freedom from infection certificate
  • Consulate permits where required
  • NES Custom’s clearance

We do not add anything at all to third party payments made on your behalf, but simply add these to your estimate, shown as itemised disbursements.
